The building of Misasa public school, which was built from wood, collapsed in the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945, and was later completely razed in the ensuing fires. All that remained were the ruins of the assembly hall, as it was of steel frame construction. This camphor tree survived the atomic bombing at the north side of the Japan electrical instrumentation testing site at 1-chome, Misasa-cho; it was moved to its current location after the war.
