Josei-ji |
15-22 Sumiyoshi-cho, Naka-ku
Located near old Sumiyoshi-bashi Bridge (red coat hanger next to new bridge) on Route 2.
Ginkgo: 1420m
A priest belonging to this temple told me that this Ginkgo was planted in 1900 and that in 1945 when the blast struck there was a factory next door which had high walls. These walls protected the tree from destruction. The temple has since been rebuilt three times. Each time around the tree.
Plaque:
This ginkgo withstood the atomic bombing on August 6th 1945. When the new hall was constructed in 1981, the tree was preserved by building the staircase around it.
