Kokutaiji temple Love cave pond (atagoike)

7-6-1 Naka machi, Naka ku, Hiroshima
and 10-1-1 Ko machi, Naka ku, Hiroshima.

These are the former grounds of Kokutaiji temple. This pond is called Atagoike because it is on the site of Chingon Atago shrine, Kokutaiji temple. Existing from the 1601, the year that kokutaiji temple was established, this pond gives a sense of what the region used to look like, providing valued insight into the formative period of castle town architecture.

Also, this pond was part of the reef extending onto the grounds of Shirakami shrine. It is thought that the coastline was in this vicinity during the formative castle town period, and it was also one of the milepost markers for the delta formation, truly a significant spot. The dragon which is carved on one of the pond rocks is said to go swimming when the tide is full.

Kokutaiji temple was established as Akiji temple by the priest Ekei during the rule of the Mori family. It was renovated under the Fukushima family and became Kokutaiji temple. From 1601, the Asano family took over as feudal lords, and it became revered as the family temple for successive feudal lords.

Currently, Kokutaiji temple is located on a hilltop at 3-chome, Koiue, Nishi-ku, Hiroshima.
